{"id":5468,"date":"2014-04-03T06:22:49","date_gmt":"2014-04-03T10:22:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.datamyne.com\/?p=5468"},"modified":"2022-05-03T14:48:36","modified_gmt":"2022-05-03T18:48:36","slug":"growing-trade-palm-oil-drives-quest-sustainability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.datamyne.com\/knowledge-center\/imports\/growing-trade-palm-oil-drives-quest-sustainability\/","title":{"rendered":"Growing Trade in Palm Oil Drives Quest for Sustainability"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kellogg\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.kelloggcompany.com\/2014-02-14-Kellogg-Announces-Global-Commitment-To-Fully-Traceable-Sourcing-Of-Palm-Oil\">announcement<\/a> that all its palm oil suppliers must source the low-trans-fat oil in a way that is \u201cenvironmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable\u201d is a major win for environmentalists.<\/p>\n<p>Kellogg will be working through its supply chain \u2014 from suppliers to processors to growers \u2014 to ensure its palm oil can be traced to plantations that are independently verified as legally compliant; adhere to the company&#8217;s principles for protecting forests, peat lands, and communities; and compliant with all Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) principles and criteria. Suppliers have until the end of 2015 to comply (or be hard at work closing any gaps in compliance).<\/p>\n<p>Environmental advocates such as Greenpeace <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/Global\/usa\/report\/2010\/2\/how-the-palm-oil-industry-is-c.pdf\">charge<\/a> that the drive to meet demand for palm oil is causing a number of environmental ills, starting with the clearing of rain forests and burning off of peat fields in Indonesia. As one Greenpeace palm oil campaigner said (to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csmonitor.com\/Business\/The-Bite\/2014\/0219\/Kellogg-pushes-sustainable-palm-oil-Is-it-enough\">Christian Science Monitor<\/a>), \u201cHaving Kellogg join is huge.
