{"id":6291,"date":"2014-08-11T16:29:41","date_gmt":"2014-08-11T20:29:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.datamyne.com\/?p=6291"},"modified":"2022-09-09T09:39:57","modified_gmt":"2022-09-09T13:39:57","slug":"game-chicken-stands-lose-russia-sanctions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.datamyne.com\/knowledge-center\/exports\/game-chicken-stands-lose-russia-sanctions\/","title":{"rendered":"Game of Chicken: Who Stands to Lose from Russia Sanctions?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Russian consumers will likely top the list of losers under Moscow\u2019s one-year ban on all meat, fish, poultry, dairy, fruit and vegetables imports from the US, the EU, Canada, Australia, and Norway, effective August 7, 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Or, as the New York Times put it, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/08\/08\/opinion\/russia-sanctions-itself.html\">Russia Sanctions Itself<\/a>:\u00a0the larger and more diversified exporting countries are better positioned to absorb the sales losses than Russia, which imports 40% of its food by value, is to withstand shortages and inflated food prices.<\/p>\n<p>Take, for example, chicken cuts (HS02714).<\/p>\n<p>Introduced as US food aid in the 1990s \u2013 when they earned the nickname \u201cBush legs\u201d \u2013 chicken cuts imports have been banned by Russia before (in 2002, 2008 and 2010). Still, they remain the third ranked US export to Russia. \u00a0But Russia is one of many customers for US chicken, accounting for 7.65% of US chicken cuts exports by value in the last half.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.datamyne.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2014\/08\/US-EXPORTS-Chicken-Cuts-Markets-2012-14-LINE-GRAPH.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6292\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6292\" src=\"https:\/\/www.datamyne.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2014\/08\/US-EXPORTS-Chicken-Cuts-Markets-2012-14-LINE-GRAPH.jpg\" alt=\"Russian Sanctions US EXPORTS Chicken Cuts Markets 2012-14 LINE GRAPH\" width=\"475\" height=\"511\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.datamyne.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2014\/08\/US-EXPORTS-Chicken-Cuts-Markets-2012-14-LINE-GRAPH.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.datamyne.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2014\/08\/US-EXPORTS-Chicken-Cuts-Markets-2012-14-LINE-GRAPH-278x300.jpg 278w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 475px) 100vw, 475px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, as data from our Russian trade database shows, the US accounted for slightly more than half of chicken cuts imported by value \u2013 and 61% by volume.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.datamyne.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2014\/08\/RUSSIA-IMPORTS-Chicken-Cuts-Sources-Jan-Apr2014-PIE-CHART.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6293\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6293\" src=\"https:\/\/www.datamyne.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2014\/08\/RUSSIA-IMPORTS-Chicken-Cuts-Sources-Jan-Apr2014-PIE-CHART.jpg\" alt=\"Russian Sanctions RUSSIA IMPORTS Chicken Cuts Sources Jan-Apr2014 PIE CHART\" width=\"450\" height=\"327\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.datamyne.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2014\/08\/RUSSIA-IMPORTS-Chicken-Cuts-Sources-Jan-Apr2014-PIE-CHART.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.datamyne.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2014\/08\/RUSSIA-IMPORTS-Chicken-Cuts-Sources-Jan-Apr2014-PIE-CHART-300x218.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But, while the Russian bans (to date) may have muted impact on the US national trade ledger, individual US exporters to the Russian market will feel the loss more keenly\u00a0(while Latin American exporters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2014\/08\/07\/us-ukraine-crisis-sanctions-chile-idUSKBN0G72LQ20140807\">reportedly<\/a> stand to gain).<\/p>\n<p>Who stands to lose from Russia sanctions? The company specializes in the export of poultry and meat products from the US, Europe and other countries around the world.<\/p>\n<p>The trade data can also provide a measure of the exporters<strong>\u2019<\/strong> exposure to the Russian ban.
